The New Democratic party(NDP) was founded in 1961 in Ottawa, Canada. In 1989, Audrey McLaughlin became the first female leader of a national party, and of the NDP. The NDP first became official opposition in the 2011 federal election. They have not yet formed a government. The current NDP leader is Tom Mulcair. He is sixty-one years old, and a citizen of both France and Canada. He became the leader of the NDP in 2013, after the former NDP leader, Jack Layton, passed away. |

- Expanding home care.
- Creating a youth mental health innovation fund to reduce wait times and improve access to health care.
- Tripling the paid leave for ill Canadians.
- Expanding the compassionate care benefit so that people can take up to six months of paid leave to care for seriously ill loved ones.
COST OF LIVING
The NDP plan to lower the cost of living in various ways. They include, but are not limited to the following:

- Making childcare available for no more than $15 a day.
- Allowing five extra weeks of parental leave.
- Lowering high ATM fees.
- Speeding up family reunification.
- Increasing student grants and eliminating interest on student loans.
- Reinstating+ federal minimum wage and raising it to $15 an hour.
ECONOMY AND INFRASTRUCTURE

- Reducing small business tax from 11 to 9%.
- Supporting innovation and investment in companies creating jobs in Canada.
- Contributing $1.5 billion a year to funding to municipalities to fix roads, bridges and water treatment systems.
- To invest $1.3 billion a year in a national effort to improve transit and reduce gridlock.
- Boost investment in tourism.
- To help retrofit over 50,000 homes and apartment buildings.
- To invest in protection from floods and preparation for disasters.

- Put in place firm targets to cut pollution levels.
- Ensure a cleaner environment by holding polluters accountable.

- Improving the Nutrition North food program, and investing in cleaner forms of energy in order to get Northern communities off diesel.
- Repealing Bill C-51.
